Mad at LFS...

It sounds to me like the tanks might not be that bad, just unplesent to look at. Algae growing can be a good thing for the fish, it helps get rid of some nitrates and theres no dead fishies. Which is prety good comared to stores around me. But the betas ya that sounds pretty Bad.

Those poor bettas! :( Dirty tanks may be a temporary thing, perhaps someone called out sick or they were super busy and didn't get the tanks scrubbed, but having bettas in a condition where they are not healthy and are obviously suffering is horrible. Write a letter of complaint, speak to a manager, see if there is some sort of "above" manager position (owner of store, corporate head if there is one, etc) and complain to them.

Sounds like he just doesn't care. I'm sure he knows what care fish require, but is in the biz for the money and not for the hobbyists/fish. I mean how expensive are tiny glass bowls? Tell him to go down to the local dollar store and pick up a few.

I would contact your local Humane Society. I would bet they would back a stink about it. I would also contact your county/city animal control. There has got to be something they can do about it.

Calmly letting them know that those are incorrect conditions for bettas would be your best bet to start off with. As horrible as it, is if you go off your nut at them theyre just going to think you are crazy.
If things dont get better after politely discussing the issue you should perhaps call some animal protection group.

You know, it isn't just the animals that are being mistreated here. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the fish don't matter, but what about the people who go into these stores and purchase these sick fish without knowing what they are doing? They are spending a lot of money on unhealthy fish while being fed mis-information. Isn't that kind of like a scam?

I realize people should do research first, before owning an aquarium, but most people have the impression that the LFS will tell you all you need to know about the fish you buy.

Perhaps some LFS's (not all, but some) count on that assumption.....
