Major Headache

Aquariums are beautiful to look at... very peaceful and relaxing. The only problem is that when something goes wrong, it is extremely stressful and taxing. I have a large piece of artificial driftwood in my aquarium, and it looks pretty nice if I might say so myself. The only problem is that it has several holes on it to allow water to flow into it. (I presume so as to now overflow a tank when being put inside it... otherwise it would displace quite a bit of water) I decided to plug up these holes with some filter floss so that my fish wouldn't go inside and get stuck/risk getting injured, but I recently discovered that I missed one fairly small hole... and all three of my clown loaches made it inside. I noticed that they were nowhere to be found after having spent 5 minutes tearing things apart trying to find them. My only conclusion was that it must have been the new branch in the tank. I started pulling it out of the water and heard them flopping around inside... and instantly panicked. All 3 of my lovely little clown loaches were trapped inside this damnable branch, and there didn't seem to be any way to get them out. I took out the filter floss and started trying to coax them out of the branch, slowly submersing it and then pulling it back out of the water, with the hopes of gently flowing them towards the easiest access point on it. It took me a good 40 minutes to get all 3 out of it safely. I proceeded to spend 10 minutes packing and re-packing all of the holes on this thing, until I could not force anything inside of it anymore... hoping that the holes are so adequately packed that the fish will not try to get inside. I had planned to be asleep well over an hour ago, as I have been sick for a week and have to be up in 6 hours for work... but instead I've been stressing out over my fish. I love my fish... and I've got a beautiful aquarium... but sometimes these things can be a major headache.

Things like this always happen in the middle of the night. I can't tell you how many times a filter decides to go down in the middle of the night probably about 2 A.M. Tonight I too am up babysitting a skimmer on a saltwater tank that has decided to go haywire. I don't want it to flood so I may just unplug it and deal with it tomorrow seeing as I need to get up at seven o'clock in the morning and it is now after 1 A.M.

As far as the driftwood is concerned,It is amazing how many things they sell that are supposedly made for aquariums only to have a problem like this happen. Keep an eye on the loaches. It sounds like they had a hard time. If It were me, I would not put that piece of driftwood back in the aquarium. I would not want to risk the fish again. O.K. it is getting late and I should try to get some sleep. I hope you and your loaches are O.K.

O.K. somethings wrong with my post number again. It is not showing that I answered your post. Does that happen to you?

I have to agree w/ Marinemom, why does things like that happen at the worst times? When I first got my 55 gal; I bought a new piece of decor for it, I don't even remember what it was now. Anyhow, get it in there, get the tank cycled, add my platies. Few days later I am looking at my tank, can't find half of my platies! And much like your situation they got stuck in the decor and couldn't find thier way out! That was at 1:45 in the morning, I had just got off work and needless to say to tired to want to deal w/ something like that.

Anyhow, I wasn't a happy camper and to coax the platies out of there, managed to spill half the water out of the aquarium, once they were out, I took the decor out of the tank and put it in the trash! Then I had to replace the water!

It never fails to happen at the most inconvenient times!

well we cant have em all i guess...

think of it this way.. count the no. of hours where u have a nice, relaxing, fully functional stress free tank and compare it to the no. of hours where u have problems un ur tank (and hrs when u r cleaning)

i guess it is still worth it right?

but i agree that it is too stressful when things happen when u cant afford em to happen.. gudluck...

btw, clown loaches really have this nasty habit of going into small holes or slim cracks, i wonder why

That is a good way of looking at it, and I couldn't even begin to count the number of hours I've spent watching my tank and the tanks at work. I love watching my fish... its just so stressful when something goes wrong! I've been paying very close attention to that piece of driftwood since I put it back in, and so far, all of my clown loaches are present and accounted for. There doesn't seem to be any damage on them either, which is remarkable, considering how sharp some of the edges inside that **** thing are.

Well, for all of those who have checked this particular thread out, I did get the branch sealed correctly this time... no more missing clown loaches for me. :-) They're even more active than they used to be now, so I'm glad.

I have to admit, I'm totally paranoid about losing any of my corydoras sterbaii. I lost one when I got my first four, recently purchased two more...and I'm just not able to enjoy the tank in the morning when I get up or in the evening after work until I've managed to count all five in the tank.

When it all goes right (which is, afterall, most of the time), aquariums are so relaxing and beautiful, that the frustration kinda melts away. :)
