If you own a Emperor 400 you know this is a great filter but keeping up with the Filter Media is a pain you can pay as much as 18$ for a 4 pack well no more buy an extra set of optional trays seen here

Plus some Polly fiber seen here or similar

And just place your favorite carbon in the first half of the tray and cut the right size strips for the other half and then lock the trays together and there you go cheap filter media

Got a cheap replacement for another filter post it here

I have really been wanting to do this, but I haven't been able to find those trays! Where did you get yours?

Even easier (and more effective): buy some Aquaclear 500 sponges, cut them so they fit snugly when laying horizontally in the Emperor media wells. The sponges are fery cheap, they last forever, and they catch a lot more stuff than a 1/2" layer of polyester batting.

Thats another way but i use realy think polyfiber its 2" think and you can get a 2'x2' for like 2$ so its a little cheaper

Except that foam will almost never require replacement. I've used the trays and batting like you're suggesting, and it does work and it's WAY cheaper than buying Emp cartridges. But the foam, IME, is much easier to work with, is better at mechanical filtration, and cheaper in the long run. Either method, I think, is preferable to buying those cartridges, though!

My emperors both came with the extra cartridges. 280 and 400.

yeah they come with extra trays but we are saying to use the extras with like carbon plus buy a second set and use them as the main filter media
