Ok here's the story.
Ever since I got my 3 male fancy guppies, they have been getting fat. One blue one in particular is pretty darn chubby for a guppy.
I have been feeding my fish every other day for about a month and a half now. The GUPPIES can devour the 5 flakes or bloodworms that I put in within 3 minutes. I am worried about their "weight problem". They are always near the top waiting for food. When I first got them they were lively and playful. Now their lives are an everlasting search for food.
Also in the tank I have 2 otos and 4 neons. The oto's couldn't care less about what else goes on in the tank, and they are getting fatter then when I got them, they were skinny lil shrimps. The neons, well, they are my other worry. The guppies won't let them get any food and I am afraid they risk starvation. Also, I sort of doubt it, but the guppies are almost big enough to eat the neons for lunch. should I be worried about this?
Do you have any solutions for my neon hunger and guppy obesity problems?

Thank you
:/

As for the guppies, well that's the life of a livebearer: eat and mate. Your neons however may have a hard time feeding with them around. Since neons have very small mouths crush some of the flakes up for them. As you guppies are feeding they will knock the little piece down for them to eat.

Eat and mate... sounds like a fantastic way of living :joke: :joke:

Do as homer said with the crushed flakes. Also, don't worry about the guppies eating your neons. Don't think that would happen.

My rainbows are pigs. They zip from the middle of the tank, hit the top with food, then zip back down to the middle. Makes quite a bit of splashing and I've gotten wet a few times :P

I've found that the freeze dried brine shrimp made by Hikari -- crumble some of it up fine and some not so fine -- works great. The little little stuff is small enough for the neons and too small for the rainbows. Some will float, and some will sink fast. I can see the neons going ape near the bottom and getting pieces just right for their size. The corries get some too.

Hope that helps,
Roan

do you have pictures of your guppies? if so can we see them?

IMO, getting sinking pellets, the guppies will eat the ones that float and knock a bunch down for the neons to eat.

Thanks for the info!
I will try to get some pics. This is my first batch of neons, in about 2 weeks or so I will get 4 or 5 more.

Well all that my guppies can do is eat, because there aren't any females in there, LOL!!
Actually I am not allowed to get any females and put them with the males because that is our only fish tank and what would we do with the babies!?!? lol

Thanks again

Babies are lunch for dad! ;) And why do you only feed every other day? There is nothing wrong with it but i was just wondering i feed mine twice a day except on sundays? Anyway another idea sprinkle some flakes at one end for the guppies and while they aren't looking feed the neons elseware. I wanna see your fat guppies too!

what type of food are you feeding them? your fish may be getting overly fat because of the food you give them, and not because they are eating too much, especially if you only feed them every other day. Im a huge fan of 'ocean nutrition: formula two' (I have no idea why its #2 or what #1 does though). here are the specs incase you want something similar or cant find ocean nutriion brand:

crude protein (min) 50.3%
crude fat (min) 12.1%
crude fiber (max) 0.6%
moisture (max) 8.8%
ash (max) 5.1%

hope this helps!
