A few months back I went to a LFS, not my usual place. There I saw a beautiful black and blue fish in the "assorted cichlid" tank. I thought it resembled pictures I had seen of a Johanni. Since I was not sure I asked the person waiting on me. They said it was a Johanni. I brought "him" home and all was going great. About the time other color changes were happening in the tank (learned chipoake was male, that's an awesome change in color) this fish started to lose/change color. The picture is what I see 95% of the time. I did see that blue black coloration about 4-5 days ago when he came flying out from behind a plant and gave chase to another fish. When he was done with his chase and returning to his preffered side of the tank he was already back to the color seen in the not so great photo. He does have a lot more yellow in the tail and on the tips of fins then what shows. WHAT"S UP WITH THAT!!!??

I have a female who does the same thing. She gets this beautiful irredescent blue, then *poof* back to the odd yellow, fleshy, brownish wierd color.

She is very blue when laying. But mine has sevarl big yellow egg spots on her tail.

I probably didn't help at all here, sorry :(

What size tank do you have, how many fish, and what are the parameters? And do you do weekly PWC's?

I did see today what I am now refering to as the "angry blue" color. It comes with attitude I noticed (never showing in a docile moment). That still leaves me questioning male or female. Tempted to think female.
The article that mee-mee pointed out I enjoyed reading and it would support my thoughts of when the Chipoake went from yellow/black to it's final intense blue/black male colors is when this guy stopped showing wonderful blue/black color.
Or I have to admit to myself that the whole darn thing just confuses the heck outta' me!!
