Just make a rubberband ball...maybe algae will grow on it to make it look like one of them. And if your really cheesy paint the rubberband ball with some sort of aquarium safe green paint. And there you have it...a cheap marimo ball.
If someone really wants to try this I would suggest using a natural sea sponge that is ball shaped (or trim it). Algae will readily build up on it over time. Shrimpies love that stuff (sponges) as it collects all kinds of yummy treats for them. Just be sure that the sponge is not chemically treated, the darker the color, the less treatment. Totally safe if natural.
I did roll them into balls after I cut them up. They need to be rolled around every few days or so to hold the shape, but I think eventually they will become balls on their own, instead of little wedge-shaped pieces.
