Marina Mini-Tank; DIY lights???

So I picked up one these 2.65G tanks for less then $8 today. Only after work I realized that the thing comes with no light and the "hood" seems to be of a design to inhibit DIY. Now that makes it a challenge, since I guess it could be run with something I could pay for more then I bought the tank for but DIY is stil DIY. Optimally I'd like to make it a mini planted tank. Any thoughts? My first idea is more then likely gonna steer towards LED, but I have no clue as to the color temperture those little buggers put out. Next step may be to behind the tank diffused lighting so as not to burn any fish retinas.

Google "micro fluorescent", your hood looks like it has enough space to mod that into it.
