For it to work properly does the dirty water need to be sucked or pushed through it?

either wil work but highly advisable to pull it through from the outside in. this will mazimize your filter surface area, extending service life before needing to be cleaned.
the water is sucked thru it, i use those in my HOT mags on each tank. since its end of summer you can pick up the same type of cart at most mass retailers look for 'intex' pool carts if you want to add a power head on top of it. they come in different sizes and are very cheap to play around with DIY ideas. these type of filter carts are not for long term constant filtering since they clog up fast and need to be changed/cleaned, often for a power head filter open cell foam would be more ideal

I figured I could turn one of or both of my unused power head pumps into micron filters by having them suck water through or push water through a micron filter such as the marineland ones or pool filter ones that aren't touched by chemicals. I figured with a micron filter I would need to change as often as necessary.
Probably also a good idea for me to search local retailers for end of summer pool filter part sales, thanks so much Rod, don't know why I didn't think of that one.

should work out fine and yes lots of places mark them down as much as 75% to get rid of summer pool supplies. intex filters come in various sizes im sure they would work great as water polishers.
