Measuring Medication...mg/g/ml/tsp SO CONFUSED!

Good 4 U, hoping that it will correct the problem. I used this once when George, the big Goldfish, acted strangely, hiding, listless, not eating...I noticed some scales missing...started with the jungle remedy AND nowadays, George is again flying thru tank...ta-da!
Hi Jac.A couple of points.The carbon that is sold for aquarium use varies in quality from o.k. to downright junk.Due to this and the fact that you don't know which brand has what grade in it,the "life" of any carbon media can range greatly.Once carbon has absorbed all it can hold,it then begins leaching whatever it had consumed.Although the standard directions say to replace monthly,most people don't.And,unwary hobbyists tend to think carbon removes more pollutants,etc. than it actually does.And,the term husbandry in regards to fish and tanks means to manage or maintain.Hence,practice good husbandry.Good luck...

Perhaps you have net 100 gram (g, gm) product/container?
9.7 gm = 9700 mg which is approx 39X 250 mg. Way too much I think.
btw, as F&C mentioned, hope no ones use 1 tsp = 7 gm to detrmine/approximate correct mass/weight of meds intended.

I purchased this stuff, Metro +. On the side of the label it says its distributed by Hikari Sales USA. The directions on the label state to put in one capful, or 9.7g's per 10 gallons. I just measured it out, one capful is equal to one and a half teaspoons. Which, if I multiply 1.5 tsp (per 10 gallon) x 7.2 (to accommodate 72 gallons) I get approx 11 tsp. That about what I originally put in...However, every online article I came across on HITH stated to treat with 250mg metro. I could not figure out how much that was!
The next day I bought the pre measured API brand, and the packets contained 250mg of Metro, and it directed to put in 1 packet per 10 gallons. One packet was 1/2 tsp. This is a third of what Metro +/Hikari suggested.
Maybe Hikari just wants to sell lots of Metro + by requiring you to dose 3x's more than needed!
The next day I bought the pre measured API brand, and the packets contained 250mg of Metro, and it directed to put in 1 packet per 10 gallons. One packet was 1/2 tsp. This is a third of what Metro +/Hikari suggested.

Jac,keep in mind that even though your tank is 72g,after displacement from the substrate,rocks,etc. there is most likely only 1/2 to 3/4 of that volume.I would dose the tank for 45 or 50g...
Ah Ha! Upon reading their info, This product is not 100% Metro unlike Seachem Metro Hence the name Metro+ (salt, etc) which will require more mass/volume to reach necessary [conc] of Metro.

Well that may explain the triple dosing (or 39x's dosing!). Maybe I didn't totally overdose them afterall... It would be smart for Metro + to have salt, I added this as well, to make sure the fish ingested the meds.
But I should probably dose a little less due to displacement, as spacefish noted.
I'm also tossing the carbon for good.
Does anyone know of, or use, a vitamin supplement for their fish?
The one fish who wasn't eating died this morning
I have one more apparently sick fish, a tiger barb, hiding in the corner not eating now. Don't know if the Metro will save him...
My severum is acting her normal self, begging for food 24/7, except for the beginning stages of HITH, which dont appear to be getting bigger, but also aren't receeding :/
Hopefully the tiger barb will perk up, if he goes, that'll be the 9th death this month. Iv'd had lots of mysterious deaths, with varying symptoms, so I hope this is the only thing or last thing brewing in there.

Hikari's recommended amt probably had very little Metro as 9700 mg of 100% Metro wouldve made poisonous soup for the fish.
w/o knowing what took place in last month, wondering if fish were exposed to extremely low/high pH?
