I am setting up a new 55. It has a penguin 330 with it. I do not understand
what I should put in the media baskets(2). The literature that came with the
tank does not say what to use, or when to change out the media etc.
thanks. My current 20 gal tank does not have media baskets. thanks 2scuba

Floss and Carbon though carbon is completely your choice, some put Zeolite in there but I dont know what it does :joe:

Mainly, put floss in the first chamber to act as a mechanical filter. In the second, you can put a sponge to work as a bacterial substrate as a biological filter.

You can add more things after the sponge. for example:

- Activated carbon/charcoal is a chemichal cleaner. Useful to remove medications from the tank. Its use is a good debate among fish keepers.

- Zeolite: it absobrs ammonia. useful to control ammonia spikes.

A canister filter should work perfectly only with the floss and sponge, as long as you don't overfeed or overcrowd the tank, and you do your routine water changes,

I just put some purigen in one of my media baskets and the other basket has a sponge to grow nitrifying bacteria in case I want to use my hospital/qt tank. Prevents me from having to cycle the tank.
