I have had a 30gal community tank for about 4 years. Some fish have been there forever, my platty's have been breeding almost constantly. I have had a few outbreaks of death over that time. However, I have never added medication to the tank, I am more of a Darwinist I guess and when a fish is so sick or looks diseased I have usually just put it to sleep. I have been trying to research different medications as I have some fin rot on my Cardinal tetras and a side wound on a Gourami...

Any must have medicines or salt that should be in every ones cabinet.

Thanks

I dunno...I've been keeping fish for ages and never have any of these conditions that seem to inflict many of the peeps on this board (ich, hole in head, etc...) so I wouldn't recommend stocking up on anything (based on my experience)

I've had fish get wounds from getting spooked and banging into tank decorations (wood/rock/etc..) they usually heal in a matter of weeks and dont need anything special to recover from.

For the fin rot I have no idea...sowwy..

Medication

Fish do get sick, despite our careful care. Fortunately for me, I keep fairly hardy fish. That gives me a little more time to cure them when something does go wrong. I keep Kanacyn ( wide spectrum antibiotic) on hand. I also keep Paragon, Methylene Blue, Metronidazole, and Melafix around.

Are you sure its fin rot? it might just be nipping, if its nipping the fins should grow back over time. Pouring an extra capfull of Aquaplus can help ease fish stress, heal wounds, and add extra coats of slime and strengthen scales. I just keep that. nothing else, turning up the heat kills most other parasites.

i always have some kind of ich med on hand because it does help with other parasites and free floating bacteria but i also have, like someone else has said, something for their stress coat but thats about it. if you dont stock meds make sure stores keep them in stock regularly and you can get them quickly.

i just keep salt and i get some melafix during my big al orders.
