Alright, so my swordtail seems to have finrot or some other fungus. A site I found says:

Alternatively, placing the fish in a bath of methylene blue at a concentration of 3-5ppm for 2-72 h has also been shown effective.

So anyone know what methylene blue is? If I can buy it at my LFS? Has anyone ever used it to cure a disease, and if so what were the results.

I have a pic of my fish when it was just starting, if you look at her fins you can see white edging on her top and bottom fins. It is not her colouring, and you can tell that it is not part of her better in real life. The pic is too big to upload on the site so I'll add a link momentarily.

THANKS :)

Methylene blue
Years ago that's all there was for fungus, ich, prevention of fungus on eggs, etc.
Any LFS should have something- it may not ne labeled specifically "Methylene Blue" but read a few labels and you'll hit on something.
There are many other products good for fungus though- found a really cook link here.

Thanks so much! I am going to go buy some on Tuesday (Monday is Thanksgiving here)! My fish owes you one ;)

I bought methylene blue for staining my microscope slides. Here, it was not that easy to find. It is by Aquatronics (bottle says order #T16-1H), it contains 5% methylene blue. The bottle says Methyblu. It is only 3-1/4 inches high and was quite expensive as I recall. Pic attached.

Ouch :) Just a quick question, I used the Fungus Eliminator and it stopped the fin from rotting any further but is it supposed to cure it altogether and make the fins look normal again?
Also, I think she may be pregnant! EEP!

I think once the fungus eliminator has done its job (no more white or rotting, so yes it should cure it), the thing that will make her fins look normal again is pristine water conditions, extra vacuumings, water changes for a while, etc. (My first betta was a problem fish and that worked for him.)

I'm not saying one way or another, but some people swear by use of Melafix after disease treatment to get fins to grow back. Read up on it on this (I think there's some postings, search anyhow) and other forums/sites and decide if it is something you may want to try.

Alright, well I guess a trip to the pet store tomorrow is warranted and I will check out Melafix and Methylene Blue meds. As she is a livebearer, I added 30mL of sea salt to her 5 gallon tank. I don't know if that is enough to help prevent her from getting any extra infections or if I should go for the melafix?
