Hi. I have a 30 or 40G long...and when i wuz looking...all of my black neons have white dots on them. The other fish like corys, and glo lights didnt have any on them. I treated it with ick jungle medication...using only 2 tablets which treat 20 G. This morning, i saw alot of those whtie dots off the black neons but i found one of mi panda corys dead. I bought melafix and wuz wondering if it is good. should i use it half strengthed? do a water change before adding it?will it be ok if i am not able to remove the carbon from the filters. i also have 2 opaline gouramis in their.

I don't think melafix will help at all because ich is not a bacterial infection.

I would advise treating with the salt and heat method because it is one of the most effective treatments.

Here iis a link to an article about ich and how to treat it using the salt and heat method:

Hope this helps.

Ty. i jst have a few questions left. Would it be alrite if i left the carbon in there becuz i cant take it out...its in those cartridge thingys. I have tetras, guaramis, and corys. Would i be able to use melafix anyway at full strength(jst in case)?? Could i use salt with melafix and should i reduce the salt content by half when i add it in becuz of corys?I also have snails that i would LIKE to KEEP.

Hi, sorry that you have ick. It is very contagious. I had similar problems in my tank and this is what I did- I used Coppersafe, and then Maracin-Oxy. I did try Melafix and Pimafix, but they take 7 days and do not work. They really aren't great. Kind of worthless actually. You can try the salt and heat method, but you have a lot of different fish with different thresholds. The cories especially do not do well with too much salt- I have one as well. I would use Coppersafe which is safe even for inverts, and if that does not work, try Maracin-oxy. Both are safe for every fish you have, even your cory. Hope this helps you and good luck. I have a lot of sympathy since I just went through much the same thing.

Melafix is not going to treat or cure ich.

Remove the carbon from your filter while treating the ich. If the carbon has been in there for a while anyway, it is likely no longer effective and won't present an issue.

Because of your sensitive fish, if you are going to treat with medication, make sure to pick up the kind specially formulated for scale-less fish.

well i think carbon been their for almost 2 wk now. i had salt in already jst in case but very little. i also still add melafix to c and i think tank is about 82-84. seems like ich is getting better cuz each day, the crystals are less on the fish. but i wonder if this is jst the part where their dropping off onto the sand and making babys again???

also btw...i checked with a new lfs(4 around me house+petsmart, petco). they all didnt have those medicines. All of them also said that they use melafix+pimafeix to cure their ich. Not salt and heat.<<<(i dont think i will belive them again...)

Neither of those medicines will help with ich. I wouldn't listen to the lfs anymore, they are just trying to get you to buy more meds from them. Heat and salt is a great method that is cheap and very effective. I've used it on my tank and it worked really well. If you are worried about more sensitive fish then just use less. A half dose will still work. Stop using the melefix. Extra meds that the fish don't need just causes extra stress.

I agree.
