I noticed tail and fin rot and decided to treat with melafix. The treatment is supposed to continue for 7 days. today is the 4th day and I have seen no signs of improvement. Should I continue using melafix or should I switch to maracyn.

Extra information:
tank : 29 gal, new, 4 weeks. done a 25% water change once after 3 weeks
fish : 2 platy, 1 molly(starting up with these, plan to introduce more later)
temp : 76F
Ammonia : 1 ( has been 1 since day one, it is not going down)
Nitrate : 20
nitrite : almost 0
hardness : 75
alkalinity : 120
ph level : 7.2

Fin rot is most common in tanks with poor water quality. Continue with the melafix but start doing some partial waterchanges-10-20% a day is not too much. You do not even have to clean the filter unless it is really gunked up, especially since it is a new tank, just getting fresh water in makes a big difference and often the rot will clear up without medicine if not too far advanced.

melafix and pimafix can be used in conjunction with many other meds. you might be able to contact the company and see if they recommend it with the maracyn. I would assume fin/tail rot would take a while to repair, your meds are only killing off the problem, not repairing the body completely. I have had a fleshwould repaired with melafix within a week but I think fins take longer. Kyle

Also, if the spines of the fin are damaged then you might not see any real regrowth. I have 2 tetras that went through fin rot and years later still look horribly ragged but are swimming around fine.

I agree, you should either do bigger or more frequent water changes, right now 10-20% a day. Later 30% a week.

maracyn 2

I'm using maracyn 2 to treat the start of fin rot. (I'm pretty new and thought I was doing a good job with the water upkeep!).

I'm noticing change after 5 days and will use melafix after this treatment.

My water is cloudy now from the pills though. DIrections say not to worry about it and the water change and filter will clear it up.
