so am i reading the bottle right......im suppose to dose it once a day for 7 days then do a 25% water change?...........i mean i guess the stuff works the fish is still alive and it's wound are better....fin looks better but i guess what will take time to grow back...

hmmm.. sorry to offer conflicting advice. I would never dose more than recommended by the manufacturer (my headache is really bad, so I will double the dose of Tylenol???). I was successful in treating Ich and for fin damage by following the Melafix directions and yes, once a day for 7 days and then a 25% water change. To do more than that is to waste the medication. It is rather like the antibiotics we get from the doctor today... take one every day till the end and that's it. You are correct in that the fin will take time to grow back, but it will grow back. How much and in what shape depends on how bad the damage was to begin with. Frayed or torn fins grow back pretty well. However, when the fin is bitten off close to the body, is when it might grow back a bit wierd looking.

Melafix is simply diluted melaluca oil in water, there is very little of the oil in the solution. Its compltely safe to use a double dose of it. Somethings you use the reccomended dose, but there are other things that work better and faster if you don't. Metro and prazi for example are two deworming meds that I use on discus, and learned to use them on discus from the top breeders/importers in the USA. I always use more than the reccomended dosage on the discus because it simply works better and doesn't harm the fish. Other things like Potassium Permagnate I am much more likely to under dose the reccomended dosages because it is a very risky thing to use. Dylox is another dewormer example that you need to be super careful with. So there are somethings that you dose more than the instructions and get better results then there are other things you don't mess around with at all. Thats where others and people who have first hand exiprience dealing with meds come into play. I will not tell someone to do something that would harm their fish, because I know they very well may take my advice.

Well, normally I agree with what you have to say here on this board NatakuTseng. This time I am speaking from experience. :) Natural products are just as potent than chemical solutions, if not more. I suspect the dosing instructions are there to be followed. No hard feelings here... just a difference of opinion.

Of course no hard feelings. I wasn't arguing that natural things weren't any less potent, because they are just as potent, but I'm speaking from personal expirience on this one as well as what I know others do. There are some things that are extremely hard to use in quantities that would cause harm to the fish, Melafix is one of them. Another is Metro as I have already stated, you can dose that 20 times over the reccomended dose and most likely still not have any health problems with the fish your using it on. The dosing instructions on most aquarium meds are just reccomendations, they're not set in stone, its just a base line where the meds become effective on what they treat for. Another example is salt, if you read the dosing reccomendations for salt, most of the time it will tell you to only use a few tablespoons of salt per 10gal of water. However, I know again from expirience and was told to do this by others who have a lot more knowledge about meds than I do, that when treating for bacteria, ich, or a fungal infection that 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup of salt per 10gal is the best way to go. I've done it and it doesn't bother the fish at all, even cories and farlowella species.

As I said above, I would not be reccomending a dosage level that would be unsafe for the fish. If I didn't know about the medication being used I wouldn't be suggesting how to use it.

LOL If I dosed Melafix 20 times I'd have to leave the house! Garsh, that stuff is strong smelling! :D Work's great though.

well he looks like hes healin up with the regular dose...but hes still not eating....thats what im more concerned with.....i throw food in their but he ignores it.......at least when im their he does.....i think ill try to find some decent feeders not gold fish but some roseys or somthing see if that will stimulate him any

Try getting some frozen mysis shrimp letting the amount you want to try to feed him thaw, and then mix it up with some garlic powder, or minced garlic. Garlic intices fish to feed, and its also a mild anti- internal parasitic substance.
