When they give the recommended wattage for MH is it a total for all bulbs or per bulb. I decided to go with a fixture with 2 MH bulbs It says for my tank 55long I should have at least 250 watt if I get a 2 MH fixture does each light have to be 250 or both add to the 250?

well, i would probably say that 2 x 250 watts is needed as its quite long and one in the centre may not be enough. Also, if you have a centre brace in the tank, with just one light you will end up with a shadow in the centre of the tank...

wait..... let me see if i am understanding this.... you are buying a lighting unit with 2 MH bulbs and it says ituses 250 watt MH and you are asking if the both add up to 250 or if each are 250?
if so, they are each 250.

No I did not ask my question correctly. I am looking to purchase a MH fixture I want to get fixture which take 2 bulbs. But now I have to decide if I on the watts. When I search for how much I would need for my size tank it comes back a Min. of 250 watts. So if I get a 2 bulb fixture do I get a fixture that takes 2-250 watts or do both bulbs have to add to 250 watts min for that size tank. So either I would have to get 2-250 for a total of 500 watts or 2-175 or 2-150 since they would add up to more than 250 watts, if the answer is a total of 250 watts for that size tank. I just need to decide on the watts per bulb needed, if the fixture will have two bulbs. You can get the fixture in any wattage per bulb.

2x250=500w is a ton of light for a 55g. I would go 2x175, you should be able to do everything plausible w/ this. You might freak out fish with more than that.

not at all. it depends entirely what you are looking to keep
so the question is, what are you looking to keep? that will determin how much light you need

I would like to keep some clams and some SPS, but not the very demanding types. Right now I do have 2 clams and have had them for not that long maybe 3 months. They are not very big less than 3" but have grown considerably since I got them. You can see all the new white shell growth when they close. I would like to place them lower in the tank. Right now I have them on rock ledges to be closer to the lights I now have.
