i think thats what they are called. as some of you may know if youve seen my potato gun, im a bit of a pyro, i would like to make my own fireworks (i know how sorta) but i want the explosion to be colored. were gonna mess with some stuff that changes the color of the flames in chem class but, she wont tell me where to get these salts. do you know anything about them and where i could find them?

Start by getting your pyrotechnics license. Info can be found HERE

That should get you a start on the right path with the correct training and keep you reasonably safe.

she wont tell me because by law she isnt allowed to due to liabilities. and i want it so i can change the color of fires and explosions. im safe with fire when i use it, ive burnt the crap outta myself before but never hurt myself bad so im very careful not to blow myself up.

Im gonna go ahead and throw it out there. What you are proposing to do with the knowledge it seems you have seems like a VERY dangerous and stupid thing to do. Explosives are serious business and should really be handled by professionally trained pyrotechnicians. Hence why I posted the link and suggested you go that route. Im pretty sure if the local authorities caught wind of you making homemade fireworks, the first thing they are going to do is send out a hazmat team to clean up all the chemicals you will be using. Did you read the link that Vicious Fish posted that explained how they use the chemicals for colors? It has to be done absolutely perfectly to get the desired result.

Most of the professionals keep their secrets (how to make pellets that do this and that, make patterns of particular shapes etc.) closely guarded. Anything that is not DOT-C (or even more tame) is not legal to posess w/o appropriate licenses etc. in most places. Manufacturing of same is even more restricted.

Go out and start asking for black powder, magnesium and potassium permangenate and thermite ingredients at your local hobby and farm supply stores. I bet you'll need to take your shoes off to count the number of BATF/FBI/State Police/Homeland Security agents you'll have following you home, monitoring your email, tapping your phone etc. etc.

there are strict guidelines for keeping and doing this.
you will need to get proper paperwork to purchase any in any quantity .

ATF I think is the authority.

I use to work in a gunshop..we sold black power and it had to stored in a certified container.
they are limited on the quantity they can sell at one time and must record transactions.

I have friends that make fireworks and they all have the license to make it..it is classified as an explosive
