I spotted four snails that piggybacked in on my new plants. They are very small and are purple with brown spots on them. They dont appear to be any kind of apple snail. I would take a pic but my camera is acting funny. Should I be concerned? These arent pond snails are they? They might be ramshorns but I am not sure. Please help.

pond snails are brown or black, so are ramshorn snails.... what shape are they? (be more specific than just round or something- are they spherical, oblong, spiral, conical???)

If you do not want them just crush them. Or if you have a Botia loach they will be gone soon too.

they are round but definatley not apple snails. I have kept apple snails for some time now and are familiar with them. I think that they are either rams horns or pond snails. If they wil not take over my tank I dont mind them being in there but if they are going to eat my plants I will throw them in my big tank and let my fish garbage disposal(oscar) take care of them.

Pond snails have a football look, while ramshorns are more spiral. But you probably know that already. I have both (and Malaysian trumpets) in my tank with no ill effects, save a calcium deficiency induced by snail consumption. I assume this because some plants show the symptoms, according to the Chuck Gadd site, and the remaining snails have really thin looking shells.

The populations went crazy at first, but have dwindled so much that I kind of miss them now. They only eat the dead plant parts and algae, and they help create mulm, via itty bitty snail poo.
