Are they the same species? If not, how do you tell them apart. I know wild caught red devils in no way resemble the ones sold at the pet stores. But I see pics of commonly found aquaria borne red devils and midas cichlids and I can't see the difference.

I was reading in aquarium fish magazine a while ago and they said that a midas cichlid is actually a large peaceful cichlid ( kinda like an oscar) but is often confused with the red devil cichlid which is very aggresive. Im not sure if this is true or not, it was an old issue and the writer might have been incorrect.

I also think that there are a few fish that go by the name of red devil. Common names aren't very reliable.

I've seen everything from the common midas looking, overgrown pink convict type red devils to bright yellow-orange with black accents labeled as "wild caught" red devils. I've seen tanks of small pink red devils labeled as very aggressive and I've seen 12" red devils in tanks with other fish that it certainly could kill rather easily. But through it all, I've never in a lfs seen a midas cichlid. I'm sure I have, but they've all been labeled as Red Devils.
