What minerals (besides copper ore) would have a negative effect on the water? I know common stuff like granite and quartz are safe and coral will raise Ph (figure limestone will as well, same stuff basically)

I was thinking of adding some fools gold to the tank, and maybe some hematite.

Bummer... wanted to do a slightly-more authentic treasure chest than those cheap store-bought things.

Wonder if I can fake gemstones somehow...

Gold is always fish-safe in the aquarium, and platinum too, though not silver, Long John!

Besides your old wedding ring, your treasure chest could overflow with garnets, rhinestones, jasper cameos and polished onyx. Caution if you have soft water it might dissolve your pearls and flake the opals...

BTW, a useful tip: the plastic aerator-activated Pirate's Chest is a safe place to keep mother's diamond-and-sapphire cocktail ring when you go on vacation. Like Edgar Allen Poe's "Purloined Letter" it is safest from burglars hidden in plain sight...

in the fish tank.

(Modern burglars looking for the diamond necklace know to go straight to the freezer for the ice...)

Especially if it's a piranha tank :)

Dunno if I want to put real gold etc in the tank, got little of that as it is... wonder how expensive zirconia is, put some fake diamonds in the tank...

did you try the vinegar test at all? dump some on and see if it bubbles..... if it does then it will definately break down......

this thread reminded me of the george clooney flick, i forget the name, but the end of to movie had him scooping raw diamonds out of the bottom of an aquarium. several million dollars worth supposedly........

now i wish i could afford to decorate my tank like that... ;)
