What could've caused this? I have some corkwood in the tank for him to climb on. I added a little ceramic hut for him to hide in. I fed him. His claw just suddenly fell off and then two legs! Then I found him dead. I added some salt to the tank because I read that they like this. I even have a little filter running for him. It could've been trace amounts of melafix that killed it, but I washed out the tank and gravel before I added him. I don't know why it died and I would like to get another to replace it, so I was wondering if anyone could help me out by telling me exactly what I need to do to take care of them. It was in it's own little 2.5 gallon tank, not in the big tanks just so you guys know.

Limbs falling apart is a sign of stress I believe.

I'm no fiddler crab expert, but I do keep hermit crabs. And when they start losing limbs like that, it usually just means stress is too much for em. What were the conditions like when you bought him? Perhaps a change in environment was too much for the poor guy.

Fiddler crabs don't just drop limbs from stress. Melafix shouldn't hurt it either.

My guess is that was already dying (improper care from the LFS?), or that there was copper in your water.

when i got stressed and sick, my legs fell off too. good thing they will grow back. i do agree it was the lfs that is most likely to blame. ask how long they had them next time, and find out water paramters including salt.

Maybe it was old or it could have had problems shedding and dies from internal turgor pressure.. what pH, NH3, NO3, No2?

Many fish/pet stores keep crabs in very poor conditions. The are frequently kept in 100% fresh water, with no way to get out. The stress from that as well as the capture/shipping processes that are used (high number of animals crammed into small containers) can drastically shorten their live spans.

Having said that, are you sure the crabs limb just fell off? Did it molt and have problems during the molt? Unhealthy invertebrates can have problems molting that result in similar situations, such as claws or limbs lost during the process.

Oh yeah and if you can check iodine level
