I just got a shoal of six itty bitty cory. trilieantus and I think one of my corys may be missing his barbels.
Should I be worried? Do they grow back? Will the little guy survive?

Agreed, they should grow back. Just give it some tender love and care, keep the water clean and all should be OK. OR, you could take it back for another one. To note as well, it may have gotten injured while being caught, or in transit.

i find, in terms of corys losing barbels, large, rough substrate is the biggest factor. i've had issues with this in the past as well when i had less-then-perfect substrate.

on the plus side, trilineatus are gorgeous fish! good find.

I don't mean to exhume an old thread, but I went searching on this very topic. I just moved my 4 tanks over the weekend and noticed that my panda corys are missing barbels. Not sure if catching them was the issue, 1-2 hours in a cold bucket and/or the overall stress of the move but they are shaved clean!!

Other than that they seem active and healthy. I am hoping they grow back in time.

I've heard conflicting reports about sharp substrate and missing barbels. There are some who say it's more likely poor water quality/high nitrates that cause barbel loss since corys naturally live in places where the substrate is "sharp".

Either way, keep the water clean and the corys fed and they'll regrow their barbels.

i have an albino cory that lost all its barbels and fins one day after i bought it. i thought it was going to die for sure but eventually it regrew its fins and barbels although his fins grew back kind of wierd... but that was a year ago and he is still alive and well today.

same thing happened when i moved my panda cories... i actually ended up losing one of 3. the other two regrew their barbels and are fine now...

Admittedly I slacked off on some maintenance in the last 3-4 weeks before my move. Then add the shock of spending a couple of hours in a bucket and then getting tossed into the aquarium at the other end. (Not much time for acclimation with all of the stuff that had to move.) Filters came wet, so no recycling, but still a pretty stressful experience for the fish.

Hopefully now that we are back to normal they will regrow.

Funny thing is the paleatus corys in the bottom 30g came over with no damage. It just seemed to affect the pandas.

Has little to nothing to do with the substrate its 100% water quality.

Change your water more often and add some plants. Should help oodles.
