Bad news (or, if you will, bad newts). One of my newts went missing, presumed escaped and now dead. So I bought another, which has now also vanished. Could it have been eaten by the other one? they are Chinese firebellies. The one which remains is about 3", the one that replaced the escapee was only around 1.5 - 2".

Thanks,
momar

its always a possibility... does the 3" one look fat, like he's eaten too much? also, do you have any fish in with them?

I used to keep newts like yours and I never found them to be agressive towards each other at all, they are very curious so I would first think that there's a place where they could push the lid off or a small hole they could fit through. They're like mice, if they can get their noses through, they're home free!

Make sure there are no spaces for them to get out. I have 5 fire bellies right now, I used to have more, but 4 got out and tried up. I discovered a tiny hole on the lid later. It's a possibility one ate the other, but I wouldn't think so.

home depo will cut plexi glass to size . That is how I sealed my tank top . :)

haven't found any dried up corpses. the fish with them/it are 3 white clouds and 3 sterba cories, so no real threat. Anyway if a fish ate them it would die because of the poison. I think they have probably escaped. There's a very small opening in the hood where the filter wire goes in...I'll be sealing it up I think.
