I have a 75 gallon tank and purchased a peacock eel about a month and a half ago. The eel was approximately 3-4" long. 2 weeks ago it disappeared. I haven't seen it anywhere. I have searched everywhere, including in the gravel. Do these fish have a tendency to hide for long durations of time?

no, but they have a tendency for escaping not so escape proof tanks. Do you have any dogs or cats, my guess is that it escaped and got eaten.

Check inside your filter! They do hide very well in the gravel and can quickly move through the gravel as you sift through it with your hand. It could very well still be in there but as Tono said they are pretty good escape artists. I had a peacock eel for awhile and he hid in the gravel under one of my rock for nearly a week, only coming out at night when all the lights were off. I noticed him darting around while getting a midnight snack.
Still I would check in your filter and on the ground around the tank, and behind the tank.

agree with labont865, most likely still hiding in the gravel, or escaped. they are masters at not being found. and yes, they hide a lot!

We bought one about a month ago. For the first week, it was easy to find, and then wasn't seen again until two days. In doing a water change and vacuuming the gravel, the nearby gravel moved and he swam out and all the way across the tank. They do hide well and can moved subtly under the gravel so you might not notice it as you're looking; have someone else watch as you slowly "disturb" the gravel and see if the other person notices unrelated movement.

Yea check filter. My 6 inch one lived in my filter for about a month when i had a filter that had dual biowheels and hung on the side of the tank. Should have seen me jump when i reached in to changed hte sponges and got that suprise, had to change my pants almost. he lived off the scraps coming in the filter i suppose, so yea check EVERYWHERE

Ditto!!
I have two peacock eels. They are to large to fit in my filter now, but one made it into the filter on day one.
I put netting around my filter, till they grew to a size it was safe to remove. Every hole is filled, so no escape routes.
If you have a pvc pipe, mine will hang out there all day.
They sometimes still burrow in the gravel, and I have done complete gravel cleanings in a 65 gal, with one completely going unnoticed. They are great hiders!
