So. Has anyone had this problem? You add 30 red cherry shrimp in a semi planted tank with a school of neons and ignore the shrimp for a month and after a month check on them and can only find like 6? You then get paranoid and look everywhere and find no others. Either they are excellent hiders or they sadly died :/ Hmm.

They possibly died and the others cleaned up the corpses. Sounds like a murder plot to me. :D

Seriously though that would be my guess. That or they are really awesome at hide-go-seek. Perhaps check in your filter. You haven't had any strange ammonia or nitrite spikes have you?

Check your filter. If you dont ave a sponge over the intake, it is very possible they got sucked in and are sitting in the media. It is very possible they are all still alive. I had this happen before I bought prefilter sponges. I thought it would just be the babies that was the problem until I could only see 4 of my 25 shrimp. Checked the filter and sure enough. 18 shrimp in there, all alive and well.

I guess we need to know what you mean by "ignore them for a month". Does that mean no water changes, feeding etc? I really can't imagine almost 30 shrimp dying without it changing your water chemistry but if you didn't test it for the month you wouldn't really know.

They can be good at hiding, but not *that* good. 24 shrimp missing would really worry me. What are the other tank mates?

I have 2 cherry, 12 amano, 2 vampire and 2 bamboo shrimp. They are excellent at hiding. I have a large piece of driftwood with java moss on it and my shrimp will go "missing" and every once in a while I see them walking around the moss. Now my amano shrimp 4 of them are pretty big so they are always out but the others are hiding in the wood. Last night I found 2 of the smaller ones at the bottom of my overflow. I have also found some in the filter sock just relaxing and eating everything.

By ignoring I mean not counting them or looking at them. I do monitor my levels and it was all fine through out the month. Other inhibitants is a school of neons and 4 amanos. Planted and has a large driftwood piece in it.

I can't imagine doing water parameters and water changes and not noticing shrimp in that quantity going missing.... you must have really been ignoring them. I would love to see a picture too.

So today was the day of my tank upgrade. After taking out plants and driftwood, I found about almost 20 and one very tiny baby shrimp ( tiny). So Yey. They are just good hiders. I'm going a bit crazy but I swear I saw one of the shrimps like half buried under my sand.
