I usually have buckets of water (rm temp) standing by for changes but was wondering if there were any problems mixing hot water with cold from faucet for immediate warmth.

Whenever I refill my tank after a water change I mix the hot and cold from the faucet through my python to get the water as close to tank temp as possible.
Unless your water changes are approaching 50% or better you really don't need to worry to much about matching the temps. Even at 50% and a ten degree cooler temp it will lower the temp in the tank no more than 5 degrees. A lot of fish (except maybe discus) seem to like the stimulation the cooler water brings. You don't want to try this with water ten degrees warmer however.
I like using buckets myself. It gives me the opportunity to dechlor the water before it goes in the tank.

Unless you do the proper matince on your water heater I would not use any water out of your heater for cooking or your fish tanks. There is a good amount of junk that builds up on the inside of your hot water tank. Do you know (if you do) do you change the rod in your hot water tank?

I do know a lot of people that use some hot water in there tanks when refilling them. yes there are some who have been doing it for years. Depending where you live and your water source you could run into a problem down the road.
If you have a hot water tank that you haven’t touched in 20 years and have not had a problem then you have some decent water (but how much of a build up is in there?) and you may be fine.
