Would it be possible to mix standard brevis and any of the other color varieties (zebra, sunspot, etc.)? If they breed, will it be a hybrid? I am just at the end of my rope searching for standard, and I can't let this fish go alone any longer.

Thanks for your help!

Depends on how you view the word "hybrid"...

Technically, as they are the same species, it wouldn't do much in the grand scheme of things. However, as it is getting increasingly harder to find "pure" strains of cichlids in the hobby, most cichlid breeders frown upon mixing variants. If you planned on culling the fry instead of selling them you could mix.

I agree entirely with culling any fry. I do not mean killing them necessarily, but removing them from stock that could be passed along to an unsuspecting public. Or, you could always sell/trade off a single, then not have to worry about mixing variants.

That's what I was thinking. It would be far easier to start over with a group of a different variant.
