heres the deal
mollies can live in fresh water, the LFS say they PREFER a little aquarum salt, but the truth is that w/o the salt they get ich alot often and with silver mollies are alot harder to tell if its all cured
I currently have a 10 gal planted mollie tank and they ALL have ich
it happens, but be sure to use aquarium salt, it cost like maybe 3-7 dollars depending on the size carton you get.

I have 2 black mollies in a 37 gallon, no salt in it or added, and they are doing great, so it's ok to put them in a non brakish tank.
Notice that Orbitorly lives in Palmetto FL, on a limestone aquifer (right, Orbitorly?). If you insist on keeping Mollies in an unsalted tank, they will do well enough if there's plenty of calcium and magnesium in the water. The pH should stand naturally above 7.6 or so
If you want a dark fish in a planted tank I'd go for a solo Paradisefish, the darker the better.
