a few months ago a bought 3 dalmation mollies. i wanted 2 females and 1 male, but my OLD(for a reason) gave my 3 females. so anyways, i know that they are fairly young, because the whole time i have had them they have never been had babies. and i know that livebearers are able to have babies a few times more without a male present. so, the darkest(mainly black)molly started showing signs of maybe a copper or orange color. i thought nothing of it b/c she was fine and has been for a while. now i am noticing that the other 2( 1 is half and half and the other is mainly white) are showing signs of this coloration too. what could it be???they are all fine, eating ALOT(u knwo mollies) and i think they maybe pregnate now that i have a male in there. has anyone ever seen this happen before?? is it my fault and my water???? any response is greatly appreciated!!! thanks alot for all the help!

Some of my platys have gained/changed colour as they age. There are several different types in the tank, and I believe these are crosses between the two. One was born a plain gold colour and has developed orange edges to his scales, and another was born looking like a calico, but the red has spread over much of his body (his parents have white bodies with black spots, and red tails).
As long as they look healthy, I wouldn't worry :)

A batch of dal-mollys fry i had was the same. A few of them got lite orange blotch's. its just bit of genetic code from someone down the line.

Color changes is very common in Live bearers, you will see color and just general looks change on a fish. This could be water quality, and diet. I have a sneaky feeling what is happening here is diet.
I have had also, fry with really cool coloration but as time goes on, the start to change color. this is also very common.
It sounds though that the new diet has alot of beta carotine (sp?) that is enhancing the coloration and causing the fish to gain and to begin to alter their color. Your fish are ok, make sure you give your mollies some greens as well in their diet. They love algae so I suggest picking up some spirla flakes for them.

gold spots on mollies!

Hey! don't worry!

I have 2 dalmatian mollies, and two black. I got them 3 weeks ago, as my friend's got 40 molly fry! So I swapped 9 of my red n black platy fry for the mollies.

Anyway..the dalmatian ones are getting gold (literally looks like gold) spots on them, looks so funky! and the plain black ones are developing white markings on thier fins and mouths.

Glad someone else has same.

Reason for 1 male to 3 female, is so that the males don't fight over the females...I have 1 male molly to 3 fems also :p just waiting now for the fry to appear.....

Also, I noticed the dalmatian ones have HUGE bellies, yet the black haven't, yet my neighbour assures me they aren't pregnant as all her dalmatian mollies have big bellies. So, I won't know when they are pregnant, until the little fishes appear!
