Hello,

Just wanted to let you all know that when I was feeding my fish in my 10g this morning, I noticed more babies :D (i've only seen 3 so far). They appear to have a cremecicle coloring now, but that may change as they get bigger. Not sure if my albino molly was pregnant when I got her or if my orange platy was holding her eggs (i've heard they can hold them fertilized for up to 30 days). Anyways, just wanted to share my good fortune with you all. Will try to get pic if I can.

Can't wait to see pics!

How exciting!! I have yet to have any fish babies, but I'd love to someday when I have space to house them all. :) I always fall in love with the baby guppies at Wal Mart. :D

Keep us updated on them! Can't wait to see pictures. :)

Pics

These are blurry, but those little guys don't like to sit still. Just look for the orange/creme colored spot and that's where it is.

Fry

They are swimming at my ugf and are hard to photograph between the ugf and the tank bottom. May be able to get some better ones tonight after dark and it cools down some.

Mine keep disappearing. I assume they're getting eaten. I've found the occasional one sucked into the filter too.

I was able to keep a baby moly alive for about a month and a half before he disappeared (assume eaten, not found in filter). I was heartbroken over that one, as he has lived longer than any of the others that have come about. One of my baby molly's swam into the gravel and died. I found him between the glass and gravel one day while looking around. Bummer!

I think I just need to find more/better hiding places for them. I saw "fry plants" at the store a while ago. A very bushy type plant that bigger fish couldn't swim into so it kept them safe as long as they stayed in it.

I have a small square of what is called breeder grass to keep the bigger fish away from the babies, but I have yet to see any of the fry go there, they prefer to stay under the ugf. Go figure, maybe if you used the same thing you would be able to keep some of the fry.

Good Luck,

slightly off topic so I'm sorry but....

Aren't ugfs... suppose to be under the gravel... so I was wondering... How do they get there?.... or do you mean they some how find their way there by accident. Just wondering cuz it's my understanding a ugf w/o the gravel is like not having a filter at all... cuz the gravel becomes your bio filter... or at least it's suppose to.

Yes, they ae under gravel filters. I don't use mine as such, I use it for extra airation in the tank. I have a whisper filter at the top for my filtration. I also don't have gravel in my tank, I have an assortment of shells covering the ugf. I appreciate your question, thank you.

Cute!

I used to have 2 red platies in my tank, and they had babies (this was when I first started keeping fish, so I didn't know you were supposed to separate the fry). About a month later I was cleaning the filter media and saw 5 little red fishies in there swimming around! It was so funny, because, obviously, I didn't know they were alive, apparently they just ate whatever came into the filter... I put them into a 3-gallon eclipse and then when they grew a bit I kept 2 of them and gave 3 to my friend.

*I'm getting the fry itch again!!* :)

Gee, thanks Emaan... it's all because of this thread that tonight I am going to dig out my Eclipse 3 and set it up in my sons room

He loves Spongebob, and even tho I'm kind of sick of Spongie, I will get 1 or 2 of the tank ornaments from PetSmart and set up the tank for him somewhere in his room.

We'll start off w/ 2 female and 1 male guppy in the Eclipse, then once they make some baby guppies and they grow a bit, I'll put some into my main tank. I am planning to replace my 29 gallon substrate (blue/black gravel) with a more natural color, so now is as good a time as any to set up a new tank and use that gravel/bacteria bed!

Thanks again!
 :D
