After receiving reassurance that my plan to install my new Coralife Turbo Twist 3X was on track, I set out to install it. New 5/8" ID clear hose - fine. Slight modification of my powerhead for hose - fine. Whoops! No cannister filter! I'm using Hagen's Aquaclear hang-on-the back filters - dang!!! I don't see how this sterilzer can work because the water coming into the sterilizer must be fed from the filter. How can a hang-on-the back filter do that? Please tell me that I don't have to get rid of the Aquaclear and purchase a cannister filter. One last time - HELP!!! P.S. If a cannister filter is a must, please give your opinion as to your favorite for a 55-gallon FW that's simple to use and economical, etc. Thank you:bowing:

im not too sure but i think you can hook it up to a powerhead. if youre looking for a canister i have the eheim 2026 for my 55g. i installed coralife uv sterilizer installed on the outflow pipe with ease. only problem was...when i cut the filter tubing..the water in the tube gushed out. it also created a siphon action so it emptied a gallon or two of water on the floor :rant2:  . that was totally my fault though

UV Sterilizer confusion

Sorry to hear about your mishap - only 1 or 2 gallons spilled? Not so bad. I think I didn't clarify my confusion - duh! Let's say you have a cannister OR hang-on-the back tank filter. Let's say you have a powerhead with a pre-filter attached to the bottom of the Coralife Turbo-Twist 3x UV sterilizer. The UV sterilizer has clear hose attached to both ends (inlet and outlet). Up until today, I considered myself to be more or less intelligent, but the more I study the instructions, the less I understand as to where the water flow comes from and then goes to. I assumed that by hanging the Turbo-Twist vertically, the hose is inserted into the filter (in my case, the Aquaclear hang-on-the back), picking up water, passing it through the sterilizer, then through the powerhead, back into the tank. But that can't possibly happen, because the powerhead pump would just force the water back into the sterilizer. Where the heck did I go wrong in my thinking, or am I just too tired to concentrate? The freaking instructions are unclear. Someone, please save me from banging my head on the wall any more than I have with this stupid project!!!! I'm about to give up the whole UV sterilization thus less algae and bacterial problems to worry about. :duh: :duh: :duh:

You can use either a powerhead or small pump with a prefilter sponge on them. PH/pump in the tank--> hose to UV input--> hose from UV output back into tank. You can adapt a spraybar to diffuse the output if needed.
