So I bought two moscow black guppies in September and they gave birth in october. The parents died and the young guppies are giving birth now. I am trying to get big finned pure black moscow guppys and right now I am getting pure black small finned guppies are large finned black guppies with a little color in them.

I need to thin out the population and bring some to the LFS, but I am unsure of whether I should keep breeding the pure black ones, or the big finned ones to get the best results. Does anybody have any experience with this?

Hey Industrial,

I bought some FBMs from someone on aquabid and have had the same experience. I have gotten some really pretty fish but several are showing some blue on the fins. I didn't know I needed to cull the ones w/color so now my 55 is filling up w/lots of them. I am trying to decide what to do with them. I don't feel comfortable calling them FBMs after chatting w/some breeders in a guppy forum - it is disappointing.

On the tails - my young males have much smaller tails until they age and mature. I have some that are older and have the long, wide fan tail - very pretty. I suppose you will see the tails grow over time as they mature. The ones w/the smaller tails are better breeders because they can swim faster and keep up with the females.

I am not so much worried about males trying to keep up with the females, I am sure they will eventually. I know it helps if you separate the sexes before they start breeding. Then the males get larger tails and the females get larger. But all the large finned males have color, and the pure black ones have tiny fins . I think I will go through my guppies on Thursday and seperate the males and females and chose the darkest male and the widest tail male, and my personal favorite male and keep them and sell the rest of the males.

Best to keep only the males and females that show the right colouration, seperate all males into different tanks with females that u think are best and see what the offspring turn out like. u would also want to seperate the offspring then into male and female tanks and grow out to make the choices what is best for u, eventually u will be left with what u want and can call them their proper names and get better prices for them, it takes time and luck... So best of luck to u
