What are the most social freshwater fish as far as with humans and/or other fish in your opinion and why? I am looking to get a social fish..one that wont dart away when you put your finger on the glass, one that doesn't hide much, one that can eat out of your hand and doesn't bite, and does not attack or kill other fish in the tank, etc.

Hmmm......in my opinion the platy or guppy is the most *social* freshwater fish. they seem to get along with everybody.

If by social, you mean having some sort of social interaction with you, then I would say the weather loach.

From my experience I'd say Ryukin Goldfish and Gold Dojo Loaches.

I've heard you can train oscars to be little puppies in water. Never had one but have heard of people feeding them out of their hand and being able to pet them.

what size tank are we talking about?

i have a special place in my heart for new world cichlids.
75 - an oscar. very attentive and fun. i can pet mine and handfeed it. not just holding worms and crickets, but actually putting my hand underwater and putting pellets in the palm of my hand - he comes right over and actually eats of out my hand. i can't say that they won't bite though. they can have tankmates, but you need to be careful when choosing them.

29g (tall) tank or larger - angels. they will always come to the front and beg for food. mine will stick their little mouths out of the water when i feed them. they let me put pellets right into their mouths, the only trouble is that my aim is bad and i usually miss. tankmates are hit and miss. i have a school of 8 or 9 von rio tetras with them and the two species might as well be living in different tanks - they show absolutely no interest in each other.

20g tank - not entirely sure. bettas have great individual personalities, and gouramis are probably good in this area too. you'd have to do more research on which species are most peaceful. also, look into dwarf cichlids like german blue rams, bolivian rams, and keyhole cichlids. they are probably all very attentive to you.

I would agree with the guppies... I dipped a test tube into the water to do a test, and mine swam in!

Mollies will eat right from your fingers too. Live bearers in general are very social fish.

Yeah I agree with the Livebearers as well and the Angelfish, most of my fish are very social to me except my shark and my dyed Indian Glassfish.

Honestly, Ive dealed with tropical fish and goldfish, and my goldfish are NEVER shy, will eat out of your hand, is always active and goes crazy when they see me open the lid. I wish there was a tropical goldfish lol!
