So I have 5 Silver Dollar that are in a tank with a ph of down close to 6.0. They are going into a tank that is slightly more than twice the size of the one they're in right now but has a pH of about 7.4 or so, and until now has just been my feeder tank.

I guess the best way to do this is

1) take out a bunch of water from the bigger tank, and add the buffer I have (7.0 buffer)

2) do a nice slow transfer into the new tank

3) then dump all the water from the transfer bag or whatever I use into the bigger tank

I can't think of a better way to do it without buying some crazy pH lowering buffer. Anyone got an opinion?

What's your water source like? Why is there a difference between the 2 setups?

If your water source is naturally higher, start doing daily water changes until their current tank is up where it needs to be--or, do the changes on the new tank if it's lower. No water modification required.

Is the new tank cycled?

1) they tank they are currently in has had lots of plants in it at any one time. the one they are going into has had a lot of aragonite and lava rock in it at any one time. water source, let's see....today is coming out at: about 6.6. Berkeley tap water is crazy. Maybe the season's first rain has something to do with it being abnormally low, though.

2) Er, I think I understand what you are saying. Based on the fact that the tap water is so low right now, I think I will just change out 2/3 of the water, add the contents of the tank they're in right now, and fill it up the rest of the way with new water.

3) Yes, cycled for ages.
