Moving out!!

Shekoi

Trying to start up again
i've found a new place at last, i could be in by next weekend. :dance :)

i'm only going to take one off my tanks :sad , the 45g. this is because of room and water costs  .

how do i move the tank without killing everything including bacteria. The appartment is around a 40 minute drive from my parents?

cheers all

congrats. I'm counting down my own days to freedom... I'd drain it until there's only a little water (1/8 inch or so) over the gravel in the bottom and get 4 people to carry it if possible. one on each side. The easier each person has it, the safer it is gonna be. Keep the gravel and filter media wet and you shouldn't have any problems. Take about half of the old water if possible. Good luck with the move

the key here is planning.

first, take out anything that's not absolutely necessary (decorations etc).

then, find as many water containers as you can (5l mineral water containers are good for this, the sort you can buy at the supermarket for 90p a go!). transfer as much tank water as you can to the bottles, and leave them in a warm place.

dump your filters etc in a bucket full of more tank water (a covered bucket, huh? )

take out your fish and put them in another tank for now if possible, if not, bag them up in some fish bags and put them in a box.

empty the rest of your water, and put your substrate in another bucket.

transport the whole lot to the new place (i think a smooth ride is more important than speed).

set up the tank again, dumping all your old water back in. while the water's heating back up, put the fish bags in to acclimatise.

when the tank's back to temp, release the fish.

leave for a few hours, then top up the tank with fresh water.

after a few days, when everything's settled, do a tidy up and put your dec's back in.

I've done this a couple of times now, and only ever lost one fish.

PS good luck with the move!

no probs. let us know how it goes!

one thing though, if you're going to move the tank with the gravel still in it, try to find a bit of wood with some carpet/foam on top that you can slide the tank on to. you don't want to crack the bottom! :sad (see the post from nuriel on that subject)

i'm out of my parents now, i've been in the appartment since thursday last week. i've now had my new tank cabinet built, so nomore overhang. i'll be moving the tank either friday this week or monday, as i'll need a full day to get the tank moved.

any more tips?

i still can't find anything to move the water in, the fish will go in bags then in to a box that will hopefully keep them warm enough.

design of new tank? should i aquascape the tank same as is now, (see new setup pictures of 40g tank link below!)
or should i go for completely different??

i'm also thinking of leaving behind the gouramis in a tank i'm setting up for my mother- could i then fit in a pair of blue rams.

If you're on the same municipal water system there should be no need for acclimation. If you're on different water systems, then by all means accclimate away!
