My once tiny angelfish and silver dollars have outgrown their 29 gallon home, so I'm looking into a nice, big 75 gallon tank for them. I'm just trying to figure out the easiest way to go about doing it all. I won't be ready to buy the new tank for about a month, so I've got some preparation time.

When I decided to set up my 10 gallon, I bought a filter for it and let it run in the 29 gallon tank for about 2 or 3 weeks and then when I set up the 10 gallon, the filter was all cycled and ready to go. Is there a reasonable way to do this when moving up to a larger tank? I had the thought that maybe I could move the 29 gallon tank's filter over to the 75 gallon and run that while the new canister filter is cycling, but I don't know if it would be enough. I'd imagine I probably wouldn't want to run that big a filter on the 29 gallon, right?

Just run the old tanks filter on the new tank for a few weeks while the new filter is establishing itself- meaning run both on the new tank. You could place some media from the old filter in the new one to speed things up a bit but as long as you are moving substrate and all it shouldn't take too long.

You will not have increased your bioload so the old filter will be able to handle things just fine until the new one is ready to take over entirely.
