I'm going to be moving in a couple weeks and am trying to figure out how to transport the fish. I'm only moving a couple blocks and will be able to put the fish in my backup/quarantine tank at the new place while the main aquarium is being setup. The filter media for the quarantine tank is currently in the main tank building up the bacteria colony.

What I'm trying to figure out right now, though, is how to transport the fish. The obvious solution is fish bags, but I can't find them anywhere online for purchase. Anyone know where I can look? Is this something my LFS will sell to me?

Second question: Any suggestions on how I can transport some of the water? I've heard suggestions about getting 5 gallon sealable buckets, but I have no clue where to get those new and unused.

Also, is there anything I'm forgetting?

You can get clean new 5g plastic buckets with lids from your local hardware store, Home Depot, etc.....you can use them for the fish too! Or you can use large plastic storage tubs to transport the fish....much less hassle then the bags....then just acclimate the fish in the buckets/tubs mixing water from the tank into the buckets/tubs....I do it all the time...good luck on the move!

I've used buckets with good results. I've also used new cooler chests for larger fish:)

Yep, coolers work great. Also rubbermade containers.

I have a gallon water pitcher that I use for my fish tanks, and I've used it to transport fish back to the store so I imagine something like that would work for a small trip!

How many fish are you moving and what size are they? I successfully moved fish in fish bags a few months ago. My journey took over six hours by road! In your case, I am sure a five gallon bucket would be more than enough.

i wouldnt bother on bags. what i used was big rubbermade tubs. you can keep a lot of the old water and hold some big fish or a lot of little fish. if your moving only a couple blocks you might not backup/quarantine tank. it shouldnt take to long to move the tank. this is what i did last time i moved a tank.

big rubbermade tubs with lids for the fish and extra water. i took all but a inch of the water out of the tank. i put plastic on top just in case it splashed. i had another tub where i put the filter in and kept it wet. if everything is kept wet the bacterial shouldnt die off. when you set the tank back up fill it up part way and then start puting as much of your old water in. then put fish in. i was able to do with with only a small mini cycle. if you do it all at one time and not wait then it should be fine.

good luck.
