I am so frustrated by what I'm seeing in New Orleans. It's an understatement to say that it's a complicated issue. I wanted to email MSNBC and ask why they can't use their helicopters to drop food, water, and maybe some tarps or something for those people trapped on their roofs or on third floors. I can't email MSNBC because they don't give their address, they just link it and the link doesn't work!!! :confused: :mad2: :mad2: I understand why they aren't allowed to rescue the people - they could be sued if anything went wrong, etc. But it's heartbreaking to see those people and really not be able to help. It's even worse that I know the reason I can see people trapped is that SOMEONE flew by them to TAKE the picture - not really to help. Can you imagine being trapped on your roof amid floodwaters, with no food or water or shade in 90-something heat, maybe with a child, and someone has a helicopter right there and doesn't even drop water for you - after all, they can afford the fuel for the helicopter. :shark: Sorry, I just had to let this go somewhere. Trust me, if I had a boat I'd be finding a way to get over there and help those people. Cash does no good in that situation - a dollar bill can't feed, clothe, water or protect you without the goods to trade it for. I just pray that those people will survive the wait for help. :hang:
 
Never mind the news organizations helping. What about the government? Thousands of people were sent to the convention centre, but there was no plan for when they got there! Why wasn't there a stock pile of water and rations there for when they arrived? Why is FEMA saying they didn't know people were there until recently? Those people were told to go there by officials. Now babies and elderly are dying of dehydration while they wait for help that still hasn't come. If the news organizations can make it there to take pictures, and can talk to the people in there through cell phones, then why hasn't at least water and food been sent?
 
I saw an interview with a lady who was upset that we can send thousands of troops overseas to fight a war to "help" other countries, but can't even take care of our own. I bet if all the soldiers in Iraq came to N.O. to help out, things would be a bit better. And where is all the foriegn aid? How many of those countries we help when they have it bad have given US a helping hand?
 
MSNBC's news choppers arent equipped to rescue people, or deliver supplies, nor are their pilots/co-pilots trained for it. It would be more dangerous if they attempted such things.

And there is a massive amount of food and water. Its not a matter of having the food, its a matter of distribution. The city right now, is nearly totally lawless, all sorts of well armed thugs roaming the streets robbing people, hijacking ambulances, etc. And even without these people, its still extremely difficult to distribute food and water throughout the city. Its very difficult to get around in a boat, as you dont know whats right under the water surface, its nearly impossible to get around in a car or truck. So the only alternative is helicoptors. And thats a simple matter of how many search and rescue helicoptors we have, how many search and rescue members there are, and where these helicoptors can land. Figure there are some 100 thousand people still in new orleans, figure each helicoptor can take 5-7 people, and it probably takes them a half hour or so to go out, find these 5-7 people, load them into the helicoptor, then fly back, land, and unload them. Even if there are hundreds of helicoptors, its an extremely slow process.

As far as the military being in Iraq, thats total nonsense. Most of the national guard troops stationed in Louisana have just been called up today or yesterday. There are tens of thousands of national guard, navy, and coast guard personel around the US that can be called up. Our military force in Iraq is ~150,000. We have a total military size of about half a million.(not including the coast guard) So most of our troops are not in Iraq and Afghanistan, far from it.
 
If you have a chance, go to www.cnn.com and listen to the mayor's interview about what's goin on .. It's truly a sad situation.. . . I really hope everything will start getting done soon...

I think he makes some very good points by the way. . .
 
I heard today, on the radio, that the NBC crew has become involved in doing what they can for individual families on a one-to-one basis. You have a camera man giving the bottle of water he/she has to someone and that sort of thing. They are not trained nor do they have the resources to do what they like.

I also heard a bus driver say, "I promised my wife I wouldn't go in there without armed troops."
 
I heard today that Pres. Bush is going to New Oreans..yay. and that the government is trying to do everything that they can. It just takes time to go through the different levels of government. Besides..soldiers couldn't go to New Orleans very easliy. It is all flooded! If someone fell into the water they would either be drowned, elecricuted. I think that everyone is doing as much as they can at the moment. I hate seeing people on their rooftops too. I DO agree that people should be usuing helicopters to rescue the people but maybe they haven't thought of that yet:)
 
They have been using helicopters but it is a slow process. They you have some (most foul language) who decide to shoot at them.

Mishi - which convention center are you talking about? I know people have been bussed to the Astrodome, but I haven't heard anything about a lack of supplies there.

I can't say anything about the criminal minded - I might melt my computer! :sick:
