Well, we had the whole neighborhood over today and after everyone cleared out I looked in the fish tank.

Apparently my 3 yr old decided to have a demonstration on how to feed the guppies. The bottom of the tank was covered in fish food.

I just did a water change to try and suck up as much food as I could. I will do it again tomorrow.

Do I need to start testing water parameters everyday again?? I was going to add new fish this week, should I wait? Am I over reacting ?

Yes it was a good idea to do a water change. Do a water change of about 40% for the next few days and make sure to siphon out the food from the gravel. Once you get most of the food out then you can start going back to your normal water changes of about once a week. You will want to test the water for the next few days to be sure that your water prams do not get out of hand. Guppies seem to be pretty hardy fish so they should be ok as long as you do what is stated above. I would wait to add any other fish until this problem is resolved.

By the way how big is the tank and how often do you do water changes and gravel cleaning?

Others may have some other ideas but this is what I would do.

My 3 year old did the same thing , except my 10g has just a betta in it for now. I realized it the next day, but didn't think to grave vac it out. Catched at much food as I could with a fish net. About a week later i started having major ammonia problems, and finally realized why. Spent about 1 hour doing a gravel vac and removing and floties with my fish net, and ammonia took about 2 days to clean up back down to zero. Good luck, i think you will be ok.

Kids+Fish=problems time to teach them they never get touch the tank unless your next to them. just keep testing the water and doing water changes like people said.
