Okay. So I have a question.

I have had a Betta for a while, and all of the sudden at the bottom of my tank I noticed that there was this white cloud kind of...growing. It was kind of fuzzy looking and I wasn't sure what it was, so I called my brother, who is really into salt water aquariums. He said to try to get rid of it with a turkey baster.

When I tried, it got rid of most of it, but in the process left pieces of it in the water. I got kind of freaked out and took my Betta out and put him in a different container so he wouldn't be in the water with the stuff. But my brother said it would be fine. He said the stuff would settle and I could try to take it out again. Then, he stirred it up. Gah. So, I put my fish back in the water. And the water was all weird and kind of dirty with the cloudy stuff in it. But my brother said it would settle in a few minutes. So I left and when I came back later that night to go to sleep my fishy was deeaaaad. : (

It was sad.

So, does anyone know why he died, per chance? Maybe you've had that white fuzzy cloud growing in the bottom of your tank?

Anyways, thanks for any help!

My tank is one gallon, by the way. Of course it's freshwater with the Betta.

Do you do regular gravel vacs? How long has this tank been up?

Do you have a good liquid test kit? Filtration?

I don't have any test kits besides an ammonia one.

I thought you didn't need a filter for a Betta? Should I still use one?

I don't have a gravel vacuum yet, I have had my tank for about a month. I still need to get one. How often should I do one?

i find i have to gravel vac pretty infrequently but i usually get to it every other water change (or, every other week).

how often were you doing water changes? 1 gallon is a little small (but still very popular) size for a betta, so you'd have to be changing the water pretty frequently.

Do you plan on getting another one? I recently upgraded my betta tank to a 3.5 gallon (still a tad small, 5 gallons or more is premium) filtered, heated, lit tank for under 60 dollars canadian.

filter--yes

heater--yes

liquid test kit--yes

gravel vac--weekly

water change--yes weekly, 30%
