My boyfriend says.......

I told her it would take at least 3 trips...

I would do it in two trips.. I like it when the headlights illuminate the birds in the trees :)

I don't know why won't my wife let me buy a pickup truck.

jackiomy -- Here's an explanation to beat your boyfriend over the head with.

Unless your water quality is really poor large water changes are very beneficial to your tank. The oxidation of nitrogen from NH4 -> NO2 -> NO3 releases four hydrogen atoms. The oxidation of sulfur from R-SH to SO4 also releases hydrogen (R is an organic molecule usually a protien). These free hydrogens increase the amount of free H+ in the water. This decreases the pH (pH is the negative log of the concentraion of H+ ions. For example a pH of 6 has 10 times more free H+ than a pH of 7).

So basically the buildup of waste in the tank cause the pH decrease. This means that frequent water changes are needed to keep the pH stable.

If he argues "But in nature the fish don't get water changes." Come back and I'll give you another bit to beat over his head.

^ didn't we all suggest this en masse some months ago?

Yes you did. I have to wait til the first of the year because I am a nice (but stupid) person and told him he could stay til then so he could save up some money. And I just needed your imput once more. :evil_lol:

Our input is simple he needs to be output! Out on the curb. If he wants to be lord and master he needs to find another castles because his ideas for fish care don't float. Monthly water changes can cause dramatic change in the water chemistry needlessly stressing the fish. As the others have said, smaller more frequent is much better.

I do approx. 25%-30% weekly and a 50% every 6 weeks or so. This gives me the most stable parameters I have found. That is for me and may not work for you. But still, weekly changes are the only way to go.

Probably wouldn't hurt to show him the 27 (thus far) replies that say he is wrong.

What he said. And...........find a new boyfriend! Life is to short to try to make someone else happy!

So most of the responses I had come up with has already been covered by the past 3 pages of responses... just wanted to add another post suggesting the same things.

Here's one idea that hasn't been mentioned... and is a semi-cruel way of getting the point across. Keep the kitchen trash can in his bedroom. (assuming he has his own room... if not, this idea won't work) Tell him he can only take out the trash once a month. See just how quickly he agrees that waiting a month for it to build up is far too long, and compare that to fish waste building up for a month. If he argues its not the same, point out that you're not even making him gather all of his "waste" to decompose in his living environment, and that he needs to just drop it.

Weekly or more often water changes are much healthier for our fish than letting it go for a whole month. I'm personally really mad at myself for having let my tank go almost 2 weeks without a water change... I usually do at least 2 50% changes a week. (the fact that I've been crazy busy of late doesn't make up for it, but it is legitimately true)
