All parameters are good except a little nitrates. It is an african cichlid. I have a anoher one die a couple of months ago is it related.

Need more info.

Is this the only fish in the tank or are there other Africans in with it? If there are other Africans in the tank, they may have killed them.

How long have you had these fish? Sometimes it can take up to 3 weeks to see signs of illness from new acquisitions which is why it is best to quarantine any new arrivals for at least 3 weeks. If you just got them this could be stress related illness from the trip home, too.

How long have you had the tank? Africans can be really touchy about water quality. If your tank is new and hasn't cycled yet then that may be the culprit.

I have had this tank for over a year now and the water quality is fine except for a little nitrates.I have had the fish 8 months. I currently have 10 african cichlid in the tank and started with 12.

How big is the tank and how big are the fish and what kind of Africans?

What kind of cichlids? Also you say parameters are good except for the nitrates. Do you have the actual numbers? Also you say another died and the deaths are related. Care to elaborate? What symptoms did they show? We can't figure out what is wrong unless you are specific.

I don't know the exact numbers because i got it tested for free at petco. But the only thing they said i had any of was nitrates. Everything else tested zero meaning nitrite, ammonia sorry for get he rest. I think they eve tested for phophate and chlorine and heavy metals etc. They are very thorough.

How often do you do water changes?

Do you have plenty of hiding places? for 10-12 cichlids in a 29 gallon you would probably need around 15 hididng places/caves.

They could be getting stressed, attacked, or diseased.
