So, here is how my day looked this morning:

Bright, sunny, warm. Expecting some new fish (pencilfish for my 20l) and wanting to do some observations on my 75 and 20l to see how they are holdin up now that I can't check them every day. Basically, a good, happy day. Yea, I got banned from a different site (mostly because I was hated by the admin there... they are all unforgiving), but that's fine by me. I was planning to set up a 30tall at my dads, all was well. I even found the AC Chat room again after a long time not remembering it existed.

However... I arrive home, there is my box of delayed fish from LiveAquaria, right where they should be! All looks well! I go downstairs with my box to where my 75, 40, and 20l are. And guess what I find... yep, not only are the pencilfish DOA, but some disease or disaster in my tank has wiped out most of my tetras, rainbowfish, and even a cory. So I went from a tank with 12 blue neons and 6 black neons to a tank with 3 blue neons and 3 black neons. I also lost 2 of my 5 serpea tetras. I know I lost 3 of the 6 rainbowfish, and one of my 6 cories. I can see other diseased fish in the tank as well, and even the cories (though they seem to be acting the same) have fins with little bits missing. Now the kicker: I can't do any tank maintenance because my dad can't give me the time needed for a 50% WC. So, all said and told, I lost... 6 blue neon, 3 black neon, 2 serpea tetras, 3 neon rainbowfish, 1 cory, and 3 pencilfish. Earlier, I lost my male betta (he'd been doing so well!) and several neon tetras (I didn't have time to pay attention to the tank then either). With all the other fish in the 75 possibly infected with this disease, and only the glass catfish appearing untouched/affected by it. The pencilfish were going to be placed in my 20gal as the final stocking, but that tank has it's own issues (I can only find the cories, all the other fish have vanished) but I don't even care (the tank is mature, the fish are probs just hiding). I'm officially depressed, and I bet that by Friday (which is when I can get to my moms next) I'll have lost at least 6 more fish.

So... if this keeps up and I end up with just my catfish and maybe a few cories I'll probably set them up in what was going to be my angelfish tank and just shut down the 75... meanwhile my 40gal will my pest fish and my other male betta is thriving. I don't know if I want to just poison them all and stop fishkeeping or keep trying.... it's just depressing.

Sorry you guys had to hear me rant, but I needed to vent after this unpleasant discovery. If anyone has ideas on why/how the fish died, I can explain the symptoms of the one fish that wasn't yet dead when I arrived.

It's an adult serpea tetra, about 1.5-2in long, with heavy bloating of the body. The fins all looked fine, the body held all it's coloration, and, to be honest, it looked fine except for utter listlessness and the bloating. The other fish were already dead when I got there, and most were starting to decay.

Please help,

~Travis

Sorry to hear the bad news. Without knowing why the tanks crashed, I would take surviving fish quarantine then and try and treat if possible. As for the diseased tanks, it probably would be safer to tear them down and re start.

As for feeling depressed, keep your head up, you can alway re stock and re design your tanks, perk of the hobby.

And just so you know others have issues too, my favorite snail if 2 1/2 years died today. And I just got a 80,000 hospital bill from when I blacked for 4 days for unknown reasons. Insurance will cover 80% of it so I owe 20 grand, and they still don't know what happened. Side note, I am only 28 years old. So keep your spirits up and decide how to handle your tank issues and move on.

Sorry for sounding self centered... I know I'm not alone in having bad days. If I could edit out the venting from my above post I would do so now.

Anyway, on to the fish, which are the ones suffering most right now I'm sure.

All the surviving fish except the pleco can, as adults survive in a 20 gallon tank. I will shift my equipment over to my 20gal on friday (which is the soonest I can get over there) and move the fish into the 20 for treatment and QTing. I will probably keep them there during the tear-down and reconstruction of the 75gal tank. Now, here is a big question: when you say tear down, do you mean completely, as in new plants, driftwood, substrate, other-decor, ext? Or do you mean just scrub everything down and sterilize the filters? If the prior, does anyone know ways to clean plants off in this kind of scenario? Or will I have to dump them? Same for driftwood, decor, and substrate. I can soak them all in chlorinated water, if that would do the trick.

Thanks for the advice, and again, sorry about the whiny selfish part of my first post.

Bloating.....did it seem like the scales were sticking out at all? Could be dropsie, which is from stress from poor water quality. You did mention some neglecting of the tanks. Not trying to be harsh, just direct. If this is the case, there really is not much you can do, unfortunately. You need to quarantine the fish, hope for the best, and start the remediation process. I wouldn't tear down the tanks, just do some thorough cleaning. Live plants, hydrogen peroxide dip and rinse. Decor, bleach in water (the ratio escapes me right now) and rinse. Get the tanks going for awhile and start anew. Don't stress it.....things could always be worse. Hang in there and keep us posted!

They didn't look like the scales were sticking out, more so they were just VERY fat fish... it's downright strange, to be honest, as all the fish were completely fine, showing great color, and behaving just like they always used to until I left on Monday...

What do I do with the driftwood? I don't think I should soak it in anything harmful to fish, will I need to start over with it?

Nah bro, your ok. I know people have to vent I was just saying it could always be worse.

Keep us updated on the tanks and if we can help diagnose the problem we'll let you know.

I treat my driftwood with a bleach and water mix, it's ok to do so if you soak the bleach out afterwards. 20:1 water:bleach mix for 1 day, then 5 days of soaking in water (change the water every day)

5 days is probably overkill, but I'm a bit paranoid.

Okay, thank's los.

Guess what...

IT GOT WORSE!

I have confirmed that what I have are callamanus worms. Which means that my entire tank is pretty much dead fish swimming. I know how to treat this (I've had it before) but since I could determine what the problem was (by seeing the worms themselves) my entire stock it probably going to die. Anyway. I'm bleaching the entire decor/substrate/equipment, even the filters (without substrate of course) so my tank will be down for about 2 months I bet.

The only issue are the plants, which I've been told to trash, but I'll ask on the Planted Tanks forum about those.

The only good thing to happen this week was my birthday, so I have the money I'll need to try and treat my fish.
