Have been keeping an eye out for a monitor for my daughters computer the last month or so. I walked into a thrift shop the other day that a friend of ours runs. Low and behold, a monitor for $10. hmmmmm, its pretty good size, The plastic is pretty yellowed out. What the heck, it probably doesnt work anyway. I take it home, plug it in and wow, this thing works. In fact its better than my 19" monitor. Hmmmm, Lets check this thing out. OK, its a Hitachi and dang, its a 20" with 19" viewable screen. So, I take the shell off which was pretty simple on this one, get a can of semi gloss paint, clean up the shell and and paint it. I painted the buttons dark grey and found a badge to on the front of the monitor. Looks brand new and you cant tell its been painted at all. All for $10 and a $4 can of spray paint. The sheen matches my keyboardwhich is new.

thrift shops rule!!

try computer fairs also.
Over the last 6 years I've never spent more than 50$ for a monitor.
I've only bought 3 they all work great still! (17",19" and a 21")
unless you have a special need, refurbished/used/computer fair is the way to go
