my first babies

last night i noticed that one of my jewel cichlids was hiding for a really long time, so i looked for it and found really little things swimming around on the bottom. yesterday they were way in the back behind all of my rocks, but it looks like she moved them up to the front today maybe so i could see better? lol

it's really neat to see them take turns watching the babies.


is there anything i should do?

are there anyother fish in the tank?

otherwise if there are not i would just leave them and let nature take its course.

there are other fish in the tank. i cant really get at where they are at right now anyways, its way in the back under a big rock pile. i've noticed that she moves them up to the front in a cave, and then they disappear, could she be moving them back or eating them?

jewels are very similar to the fish i have breeding, anomalochromis thomasi(so called dwarf-jewel..)

i agree with Tightdog -- leave em be. i have 2 breeding pairs(thomasi) in a 29 with tetras, and a synondontis.

the first 2 broods i tried too early to seperate the fry, and lost them all.
then after leaving them be i now have roughly 50 fry in a grow-out tank.

the parents will move them arounsd the tank, so dont worry.
From what I have read elsewhere, you may indeed have to worry about any other tankmates of a smal\fragile nature, as Hemichromis sp. are very aggressive when breeding..

I started leaving a small lamp on throughout lights-out period, and the fry were always brought into the area with most light,
and often seemed to scatter through the tank if it was completely dark; getting picked off in the meantime.....
