So I bought my bestest best friend her 10-gallon birthday tank. She won't turn 23 until the end of August, but I wanted to give the tank time to cycle so we could buy her fish on her birthday. We're setting it up tomorrow using my old blue gravel from my 5-gallon planted tank and maybe another bag or two of new gravel.

Once it's cycled, I'm also going to put some of my platies in her tank to help gradually increase the beneficial bacteria to levels healthy enough that I can return my fish to my tank the day before her birthday and she can get all her fish without worrying about a nasty nitrite spike.

I figure it's the easiest way to up the healthy bacteria in her tank without her having to space out her fish purchases.

I just had to share. I'm so excited for her. She's one of those kind of people that makes you excited just to see she's excited about something. ^__^;;

So yeah... I'm all antzy and I wanna run over to her place and set the tank up tonight. Isn't that awful?? :P

Right on. I'm glad this project is working out.

Instead of putting platies in, why not put in some of your media (in a stocking)?

I don't think that would work the same way, RW.

By the way, this the same person with the platies in the bowl? What happened to them (you can PM me if you want :))?

in the first part of her post, she clearly states that she's using gravel from one of her established tanks. ;) the platies are merely to maintain the bioload until stocking.

ensted of platies get a clipping of your filter floss and put in her filter as well as the gravel that will get it cycled in no time

o yea and put in the platies to help it stay high in benifitial bactiria lol i forgot about that

Opps...missed that. :)

If she's eager to do something with the tank before her birthday, maybe you both could go plant and/or decoration shopping, so those could be ready for fish, too.

Yay thats awesome!! I like the idea about taking her shopping too :)
I love people that make you excited seeing them excited, they make the world so happy lol
