I am moving my G. Tile to a 55 gal within the next week or so. Im cycling the new home for him as we speak. My questions are not about setting up the tank and water parameters and such, but what can live with this 2 foot long eel? He eats krill and sometimes a feeder fish but a very good eel as far as leaving my daughters mollies alone. I am using agoronite reef sand (hense the long cycle) so I would really like a sand dwelling/sifting something in here. MTS and kilua loaches are all i have been seeing for FW/BW to sift and stir. The substrate is about 2 to 2 1/2 inches deep.

can anyone lend me a good list of possible tankmates? I really want a red congo puffer but im hearing it would kill (or try to) my eel...

Thanks for reading and please lend a response if you have any experience with g. tile`s or can point me in a good direction. :help:

BTW, I have had him for a year now in a 20 gallon. 55 will be a good change for him and allow him to "stretch out" lol.:headbang2:

Your eel is a BW fish that will require hi-end BW in the future. Therefore, no FW fish will be able to live with it. The congo puffer is a killer & will eviscerate any fish it comes in contact with. Please stop feeding goldfish to your eel, it is a very poor choice of foods, as they are fatty, diseased & not natural. Try feeding it pieces of people shrimp. If you want to feed it live food, try gut-loaded ghost shrimp. Also, if it eats feeders, it will eventually eat mollies.

As far as tank mates, MTS & kuhli loaches are FW. When I say high-end BW, I'm talking of eventually a SG of around 1.016. That's close to roughly around 3 cups of salt/5g. No FW fish could survive in that. A few fiish that you could keep in there: a single scat, orange chromides (if you can find them), a single Ceylon Puffer (a bit nicer in temperament than the GSP), some folks have had sucess with the GSP but you really need to give the eel some good hiding spots where the puffer couldn't get to him, if he turned nippy. You might also be able to keep a dragon goby with it as long as they respect their territories. Lots of hiding spots & decor are necessary to keep a mixed BW tank.

I know you weren't looking for advise about the water but how exactly are you cycling this tank? What kind of "reef sand" are you using? With sand, you will have to stir it weekly & skim over it to remove the settled dirt, for weekly water changes.

If you ar referring to: " plecostumous, clown loaches, tiger barbs, a Banded Leporinus, Leopard Ctenopoma, and what about any of the spinney eel family", those are all FW fish. The monos suggested grow much too large for a 55g tank & are schooling fish. I did actually forget about damselfish & if you get the SG high enough, you can certainly add them at around 1.018.

You know, if you really want to talk to a moray eel expert, we have one named Corvus, at my puffer forum.

Gymnothorax tile
Family> Muraenidae
Even that it can be in either freshwater; brackish or marine, in a home aquarium it should be in brackish water. But as for a 55 gal tank, that to me is a bit cramp somewhat and in order to have any other fish inhabitants, they would need to be larger then its jaws. Understand this, when an eel is hungry enough, you would be quite amazed to have wide their jaws could expand open.

If your to have an eel more then fish, you not will require so deep a sand bed, I practiced this for many decades and had great results.

Very good sound advise Pufferpunk, you saved me much typing there. Know this and learn well williamgale, that any eel when hungry enough will even bite at a larger fish for that matter causing injury and possible death just the same. You need a larger tank then a 55, that my friend is the bottom line here.

Also, you have this eel in FW at this time, add the salinity very slowly, take a long time to get it up to 1.010, do not ad the full salinity level in all at once, Slowly. And once you get the salinity up to the proper level, you will be requiring a skimmer.

I feed much more then just what i put here and feeder fish is pretty seldom
I never feed feeders or even silversides for that matter>

I hope you not mind that I responded to this thread, however, I like to see if maybe I can talk often with Corvus about eels. I would call him/her>
