My Geos - lots-o-pics -

Please pardon my ignorance, but what is a geo?

Geophagus. All the fish pictured, (with exception of Dojo-Loach) are types of Geophagus. There are Satanaperca Juripari, Satanaperca Leucostica, Satanaperca Daemon, Geophagus Steindachneri, Retroculus Xinguensis and Redhead Tapijos (type of Surinemensis). They are all grouped together as "EarthEaters" because they sift through the substrate, looking for food. (actually, I'm not sure if the Retroculus is an actual Geophagus, but they do sift the substrate as other EarthEaters) The fine sand/gravel is picked up in the mouth and expelled through the Gills. Really cool to watch.

Nice geo's, I'm thinking about picking up some surinamensis, do you know how to sex them?

What species is the one with spots? Reminds me of cichla temensis, I thought it was a hybrid lol

The one with the 3 black spots, and the red patch on the tail is Satanaperca Daemon. As for sexing Geophagus Surinemensis, it is extremely hard till they reach breeding age. Some people say the anal fins and dorsal are pointier on males, but I can never see the difference. Your best to keep a group and hopefully two will pair off. (Thats what I do)

cheers; Bill

very nice bckron.

I'm a geo keeper myself.

What species is the one in the second pic with the spots on his face?

Also, what species are the fry in the third pic from?

thanks,
joelfish

That is a Satanaperca Leucosticta. The fry are hers. They are not as comman as Satanapeca Juripari, but often sold mistakenly as Juripari.

She and her Male counterpart, were my first cichlids. I bought two F1 juvies from a LFS, and lucked out with a pair. I bought them from the wife of Lee Newman, and the juvies were product of Lee's wild stock. That was approx, two years ago. They are about 8 inches in size and breed regularly for me, and always have huge batches of fry.

The current cladistics of the evolutionary convergence of the "Eartheaters" is absolutely fascinating. From the basal lineage,
"Retroculus" is most closely related to "Cichla",
"Satanoperca" is most closely related to "Apistogramma" and "Taeniacara",
"'Geophagus' Brasiliensis" is most closely related to "Mikrogeophagus",
"Steindachneri" are grouped in their own clade with "Surinamensis" et al.,
and both are cousins to "Gymnogeophagus".
"Acarichthys" is in its own clade with "Guianacara".
