Also, if you can, watch the show "It Takes A Thief". It talks about how your home is vulnerable and them shows ways you can fix the problems. I've learned a fair amount from it.

I was just going to say that! I too have had things "disappear." Have also had the horrifying experience of waking up in the middle of the night with an unstable recently released ex standing over my bed. Do everything you can, the investment may be expensive but the security you gain pays for itself and your mental and physical well being will slowly return.
And truly, a baseball bat is much better than a gun (also from experience) - i have concealed weapons permit and have grown up with guns. I would rather have a bat when there is an intruder than a fire arm. (each of the kids' rooms have bats at the bed also).

That stinks:(

At least the police showed up. We actually pulled a guy out of our car trying to steal it...and the police would not even come out...yea, don't get me started.

Another time I had a guy break into my car and steal a bag filled with antique ticking pillows...now tell me..what is some crack head tweaker going to do with my ticking pillows????? He even stole my lotion...gotta love it.... :/

Persimmon - When they broke into our cars, the KNUCKLEHEAD took (beside the stereo, obviously)....drumroll please....a booklet of stamps!! This would not be so outrageous if they had failed to take a CD case with dozens and dozens and dozens of CDs in it, which had been lying neatly on the floor. Derp. The guy is hard up for stamps? But fails to take CDs to hawk along with the stereo? Crazy.

Ems--you should turn the reciept for the lock change in to the landlord, and reduce your next month's payment by that amount. IMO, that's something he should take care of, rather than exposing you to the threat and cost.

EXACTLY- Ems it is the responsibilty of the landlord to take care of that...If you are robbed (or worse) because of it you can sue your landlord. It costs about 30 bucks to get a lock re-keyed...

There was a lawsuit a few years back in T.O over a broken window lock...The tenant requested that it was fixed many times in writing to no avail..Long story short she was raped and the rapist entered through the broken window...Cost millions to settle it...I dont blame her.

Geez...you know...I don't feel that my safety is threatened or anything form it...but it just REALLY ticks me off. I work very hard for what I own and being estate liquidators, we search hard for things we love and it just irks me to no end to have someone come and rip it off.

I have lived in this *decent* neighborhood for almost 10 years...within 3 weeks of moving here, someone broke into our garage and stole all of our proffesional carpet cleaning equipment. Within a year, 2, $800 bikes were stolen and my neighbor SAW the person doing it and didn't want to get *involved* We then had the window to my 4x4 broke and they stole my sony 10 cd pack....7 years go by, nothing, I guess the tweakers moved out.

Scroll to this year...my neighbor's plants were stolen from her porch, the guy tries and steals our trooper and my better half yanks is a$$ out, then someone breaks into our Jeep, steals our battery charger, those pillows, which truly, I have searched 6 years for good ticking feather pillows...the lotion, TWEEZERS, and other odds and ends...it just really irks me....WHY???? LOL

I remember years ago someone walked into my friends front door after we got back from a vacation, took off with my purse and we never saw the guy...well, I had an antique ruby and pearl 14k pin valued at $8000 in it...I swear..if I ever find these people.... :mad2:

posted by leopardess: And FF - Did you find that the cops cared at all? I know a house is a wayyy bigger deal (and far more scarey) but when our car was broken into she didn't even care. It was as if it was to be expected and accepted. I know they're busy and all....but when I say she didn't care...I really mean she didn't care an ounce!

The cops seemed to care a little, but they obviously thought they couldn't do anything about it. I don't think it was anyone I knew. The house on one side of us is empty right now, and most of our neighbors are laborers, so it was likely a crack-head since everything taken would be much easier to offload. They took a coin collection and passed on the laptop sitting next to it.

Persimmon, I'm sorry, it sounds like you've had a rough time. I know what you mean about the pillows, I'd like a down filled neckroll that's medium firm. I slept on one once in a hostel and if I ever find one again I'll be excited.

A .45 caliber handgun is an excellent detourant. In my experience, the criminal looking down the barrel of a .45 usually surrenders. It isn't pretty either. Ever see a grown man cry and beg for mercy?

Sorry to hear about your loss. We keep all of our valuables inside of a 1 1/2 ton safe. Short of a tank shell, there is no way they could possibly break into it, let alone lift it.
