Last night woke up for a late night snack and look at the tank while I ate I noticed one of the tetra has ALOT of white dots and my betta has some too but I only see that only they have.

wanted to make sure I have the right way of getting rid of this...

by heating up the tank to about 83 degreees adding a bubble stone to oxiginate the tank more and adding 2 tblspoon of aquarium salt and keep it that way for a week after I dont see anymore dots.

its a 10g with 8 tetras and a betta

do I have to do water changes while Im doing this?
and should I use medication ? I have Jungle ICK clear
and last I have topfin conditioner salt is this the right salt that I need?

thanks

I'm just getting over a case. I used 2 tsp/gallon at a temp of around 83. I did some water changes to keep the water fresh, I read it's a good idea.. I just replaced the salt I took out. Example: If I changed 10 gallons, I dissolved 20 tsp salt in the new water. I didn't have to use any meds, the salt and temp worked for me. I had a few losses, but I think I had other issues going on.

Dissolve the salt in tank water using a bucket. Do not add salt directly to your aquarium. The Top Fin brand looks okay. If you don't see any improvement in a week you might have to go with the meds.

Go 10-14 days just to be safe.

3 tsp=1 Tsp

my tank recently also got the ich and it started with a female cherry barb. then it slowly spread to one of the male barbs.. thats when i did a water change(vac the substrate), increased temp to about 83-84, added aquarium salts and made sure to leave the lights off for as much as possible as to not stress any fish. And what do you know.. little by little they started to disappear.. i did another water change (with addition of more salt) after the 3 days of the previous one. and now just waiting for them to all be clear of ich and then i can start adding more fish.

I dont know if its just me but most of the time when i got ich it was always with the smaller fish, specifically those who are in the size of the neon tetra.. last time my tank got the ich it was from a female tetra.. then 2 males got it.. then during the treatment of the tank (with meds and heat.. didnt know about the aquarium salt before) the fish slowly started dying off..
so all in all i lost
3 neon tetras
4 guppies
2 bronze cories
3 oto cats

so do your best to try and treat them with just heat/salts/no light/water changes(try to vac the substrate but dont change too much water).. and try and be consistent with the treatment.

Good luck

thanks guys went to the lps and bought an adjutable heater and an air stone added them to the tank did a 40% change, the tank is now at 83.9 after about 3 hours and put 2 tablespoons of salt

everything done right so far? got a couple of more questions proabably retarded to ask but here goes will this affect my testing in any way and can I still feed them every other day like I still do now

bk282 it seems your right about the size because to me it looks like one of my tetras had it first since there is only one that is covered in the spots the rest just have one or 2 on their fins

thanks

Sounds good. I would have raised the temp a little slower, but it's done now. Your testing isn't going to be affected by the temp and salt and feed every other day is fine.

you dont really have to change that much of the water.. with each water change you stress your fish slightly so its best to keep it to the minimum but to the point..

also with each water change make sure you re-add the salt that you took out with the water change. ex: you have 10 gallon.. you do 5g water change you must put back 1 tbsp of salt.. so with when you change 1/4 from the 10g just add half of the tbsp.

another thing remember to try and keep the lights off during the treatment

and the final note.. keep an eye out on the water temperature when the heater is on.. never know when the heater may malfunction (other day my temp went from 80 to 90 without me even touching the heater)

good luck

hmm ok would it be too hot if its 85.6 degrees? I have the heater on the lowest setting and that what I have after leaving it in that setting since last night stays. consistant though...

dont think it will be too hot if its that temperature just make sure that you have your airstone running on full.. hmm 85.6 degrees on the lowest setting for the heater? doesnt make sense.. did you leave the heater in your tank for 10-20 min before you actually plugged it in? the heater has a thermostat in it so if you set it on the lowest its generally either off or in the lower 60 range.. once it hits the zone that you set it on it should automatically turn off..

hmm i didnt do that just put it where I wanted and plugged in but the light is off now the temp now is 85.1. well the pump doesnt have a setting it just pumps lol but looks like alot of bubbles are comming out it the bubbles fill like 50% of the surface.

Im really worried about the betta he has alot of spots by his gills hope they come off him soon...

see if you still have the instructions for the heater and see the exact procedure..

from what i saw is that once the spots get bigger they will start to fall off.. treating ich is not a 2 day thing.. have patience it will take from 1-2 weeks..
